Recent Events:
On August 10th Scott Lykins treated music supporters of the Brainerd Lakes Area to a benefit cello recital at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Proceeds from the concert were given to “Music Matters.” The program included works by Bach, Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Aaron J Kernis. He was assisted by Cathy Taylor on the piano.
Scott is a recent graduate of Brainerd High School and a prodigy of the music department in Brainerd. He began cello studies at the age of 12 with Grant Wilcox in the Brainerd School District orchestra program. Other former instructors include Joseph Johnson, formerly of the Minnesota Orchestra, and Stephen Balderston and Brant Taylor of the Chicago Symphony. This fall he returned to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY to complete his senior year, and earn a Bachelors of Music in Cello Performance studying with professor Steven Doane.
Scott has attended the Bowdoin Music Festival in Brunswick, ME and served as principal cellist for the National Repertory Orchestra in Washington, D.C. and the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO. Other orchestra experience includes serving as principal cellist of orchestra at DePaul University and the Eastman School of Music, the Classical Symphony of Chicago, and Minnesota Youth Symphonies. He has also performed with the New World Symphony in Miami—a pre-professional training orchestra of graduates from the world’s top music conservatories.
To say that Scott is playing fabulously is an understatement. The literature was challenging and his musicianship was impeccable. Those involved in the delivery of music in the Brainerd School District can be extremely proud of one of their graduates. We look forward to hearing Scott in the future and wish him well in his endeavors.
Thank you, Scott.
